Earlier this year, I interviewed engineer Richard Dodd (see “Tech’s Files” in the May 2008 issue), who reminded me that on many a revered recording, signal chains were chosen from a short list of “what we have,” “what we have left” or “what we have working.” The updated version of that is perhaps “what we have this century” — meaning, the luxury of many options, perhaps too many.
This column focuses on the Discipline of Obstacles. Such obstacles might include — as an exercise — imposing a limit on outboard gear or plug-ins, turning the limitations of vinyl into a basic ear-training session and being creative by using simple tools to do big things.

Live Sound International had an article in its February issue that gives useful tips for determining the amount of amplifier power needed for a sound system. This is a very hard concept for some beginning engineers to totally understand, but I feel that Bruce Bartlett, the author, really portrays the information in a simple easy to understand article.

In the April issue of EQ Magazine, they reviewed multiple mastering software tools like Sony’s Sound Forge, Steinberg Wavelab, Bias Peak Pro XT and even more. Along with the software tools of the trade, EQ talked to some of the bigger mastering engineers today to find out their mastering work flow and what productes they use to create their masters. The information from the interviews is enough to make this free article absolutely worthwhile.

My brother sent me an email with a very cool tool that will automatically detect if your computer is indeed infected with the Conficker Virus. Just go to this mcafee url (this is a safe and 100% secure url)
http://www.mcafee.com/us/local_content/downloads/conficker_detection_tool.zip
and then download the Conficker Detection Tool. Unarchive or unzip the detection tool to your desktop and then run the detection tool. Follow the attached screenshot to test your computer. If your result is “Not Infected” you are safe. However, if you are infected, please head on over to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=AD724AE0-E72D-4F54-9AB3-75B8EB148356&displaylang=en to download the Malicious Software Removal Tool from Microsoft or have Microsoft scan and clean your computer at http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm?s_cid=sah with their Live OneCare Safety Scanner.
