FileHippo adds free update checker.
by Dave Towne on Jan.27, 2012, under Computers

FileHippo.com recently released their free software update checker. What does this mean to PC users everywhere? Well, now you can quickly, usually within 5 seconds, check to see what software on your computer is out of date. There are other programs out there that do the same thing but did I mention FileHippo’s version is free?! Radarsync has long gone the way of pay for use and they installed a bigger software package that worked in the background and ate up system resources if you weren’t careful. FileHippo’s approach is very simple (continue reading…)
TV Ad Volume to now be regulated!
by Dave Towne on Dec.19, 2011, under audio

Remember when you would be watching your favorite TV show and all of a sudden BAM THE COMMERCIAL IS SO LOUD YOU CAN’T EVEN THINK OR HEAR OTHER PEOPLE TALKING? Well now TV ads will now be regulated so that they cannot be louder than the program material they accompany. The original reason commercials were so loud was so you had to pay attention but also because they knew people would move to the kitchen or other room during commercials. To be heard, they would crank up the average volume of their ad to project to you in another room. I have actually seen products that were created in order to stabilize the volume change on your TV but they often didn’t work with over the air broadcasts or HD audio connections. Reverb Explained!
by Dave Towne on Dec.17, 2011, under audio

Using reverb to create a three dimensional space while mixing can be complicated task for many beginning engineers. Back in the 70s and 80s, there really were 2 or 3 choices for reverb, but today there are even more choices and plug-ins can have 15 different presets for each. The gentlemen over at ProSoundNews decided to create a guide for reverb that explains each type and even offers mp3 samples of what each sounds like. This is a great starting point for any audio engineer new and old.

Guitar Center Sessions Show
by Dave Towne on Dec.13, 2011, under audio
I recently stumbled upon Guitar Center’s TV Show where they have acts play in their Hollywood store. They have the performance section and then the interview section like a lot of other “Sessions” shows out there. The mixes for the shows are VERY good. The room that they have the artists play in is actually a great sounding wood room where they have their guitars displayed. I couldn’t find any production information except for the company that distributes the show on Direct TV, but whoever it is did a great job sonically.

Last Gilgamesh Tracking Session
by Dave Towne on Nov.24, 2011, under audio
I recently finished the last recording session for the Gilgamesh project. We worked on about 7 songs with arrangements varying from piano and a vocalist all the way to a rock band, three singers and a choir. Three 13 hour days were all we needed to put the recordings down and there is plenty more hours to come with editing and mixing. The pictures in the gallery (continue reading…)
